Chiropractors regularly treat sciatica, which may also be referred to as radiating pain or neuropathy. While sciatica is not a disorder, it is a painful symptom of a disorder and should be treated promptly in order to reduce the presence of pain and potential complications.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition that is caused by back pain that starts in the lower back or buttocks and then travels into the legs. This pain will vary in frequency and intensity depending on the person. Other symptoms include tingling, numbness, and burning. Sciatica is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve, and a variety of disorders and conditions can cause this compression, including:
- Piriformis syndrome
- Non-spinal disorders (diabetes, constipation, etc.)
- Bulging or herniated discs
- Lumbar spine subluxations
